Topic: Paint HorsePosted: 05 November 2003 at 9:12am |
Hi I was wondering if anyone can help me. I have purchased a horse from a gentleman that told me she was paint horse. However there is only a small white patched on her belly about the size of a silver dollar. The breeder also told me that if I was to breed her to another paint that her baby would be a load paint in color. Is that a true statement? |

HI I am no expert on horses so I have ask a local horse rancher about you question. He also told me that if their is a white patch on your horses belly then it is a paint no matter how small the white patch is. If you would like his phone number just IM me and I will send it to you.

I raise APHA registered paints do you have APHA papers on this mare. If not she can be registered with the Pinto Association. On the white belly patch see if the skin under the white hair is pink. As for the gentleman telling you her colt would be loaded with color with breeding for paint it's a roll of the dice unless you breed her to a Homozygous Tobiano! There is a wealth of information to be found at WWW.APHA.COM. If you want to take a look at a fella with good even paint markings of the Overo paint line go to http://trlrider.home.texas.net/ddc.html
This is my favorite fella for showing or just to ride on a trail! |

If she doesn't have papers from the American Paint Horse Association & there is no pink under the white hair she may not be a "Paint" horse! It is possible she is what is considered a "Breed Stock" Paint. This is a horse with at least 1 paint parent that "did not" Paint out! Perhaps these folks you got her from did not want to register because of this. Other thought is that she could be a Quarter horse that with the white spot they did not register or at least attempt to register her. If she is not papered/registered that fact alone does not by any means mean she is not a good horse. *If you know this mare to be well bred, sound minded & well built you would be doing her a dis-service to not at least try to register her with the pinto association giving her an opportunity to produce nice colts by a APHA registered or Pinto registered stallion! This is assuming that you want to raise babies out of her or show her. *Please note this is my opinion & is in no way meant to make light of another persons thoughts. If I can be of any further help feel free to contact me!
